The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
